In The Beginning...
The idea behind Sumithra Garments came into being nearly two decades ago. A family venture into the field of textile manufacturing was flourishing around that time. Yet, to many within the family, this was insufficient. They felt the scope and range they could expand to and, as a result, the decision to venture forth into the manufacturing of ready made garments was taken in 1984. So began Sumithra Garments Pte.
Ltd., an organization with a competency in meeting requirements and understanding clients. The early years were not a bed of roses.Yet, with perseverance, and a strong commitment to quality, Sumithra Garments has been able to expand from a 15-machine factory with a workforce of 125 into a state of the art garment manufacturing facility with over 200 machines and a dedicated staff of over 450 highly trained individuals. Location-wise too e have managed to secure a prime piece of real estate right in the midst of the commercial district in Colombo, further enhancing our ability to serve our clients better.
Although the aggregate export turnover for the first year of operation was only $ 180,000/-, the growth rate has been such that the year 2001 saw a massive return of $ 15,000,000/-. Not bad for a factory that specialises in jackets The factory has a monthly production capacity for over 20,000 pieces enabling it to meet large orders with relative ease.
